Voluntary Peanut Butter Recall Expanded to Other Stores

A voluntary recall has been issued for additional peanut and nut products manufactured by Sunland, Inc., due to a salmonella risk. 

A Food and Drug Administration voluntary recall that started with peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's has expanded to include almond butter, cashew butter, tahnini and roasted blanched peanut products manufactured by the New Mexico company. 

According to a press release on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, the recall is limited to products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and Sept. 24, 2012.

A full list of UPC codes and product names of the recalled Sunland, Inc. nut butters is here. There are 101 affected products.

“Consumers who have purchased Sunland's Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched peanut products with the above UPC and Best-If-Used-By-Dates are urged to discard the product immediately,” said a release on the FDA website. 

The original recall on Sept. 2 was for Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter.

The recalls at area stores include:

• Giant Food - Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
• Whole Foods Market - Several varieties of cookies containing peanut butter, Peanut Butter Power Chews and Treasure Trove Mix 
• Newman's Own Organics - Peanut Butter Newman-O’s Sandwich Crème Cookie
• Target – Archer Farms creamy almond butter and peanut butter with flax seeds. 
• Harry and David - Crunchy Almond and Peanut Butter, Creamy Banana Peanut Spread, Creamy Raspberry Peanut Spread and gift baskets containing these items 

"Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection," said the FDA. "The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment."
