Herndon's Pure Matters Provides Support for Healthy Lifestyles

Pure Matters, an online nutritional supplement company based in Herndon, chose to locate in Northern Virginia for the talent pool and health-conscious population.

Herndon-based Pure Matters may be a fairly new company, but it’s one with more than a century of experience behind it.

The pharmaceutical company Besins Healthcare became interested in nutritional supplements about five years ago, Rindner said. The 127-year-old Belgian-founded Besins had been in the U.S. market for about 25 years, largely in the world of women’s health and hormone therapy.

The company began putting together a business strategy and began working on the process of launching Pure Matters, which opened in the summer of 2011, he noted.

It's impressive what Pure Matters, an online nutritional supplement company, has accomplished in the last year, said Steven Rindner, chief executive officer of Besins Healthcare Nutrition.

The newly formed company stuck to making products that are as natural as they can be in supporting a person’s lifestyle, he said, taking Besins' farm heritage and applying it to nutritional supplements.

Pure Matters focuses on reaching out to people who care about living a healthy lifestyle and the products help support that lifestyle, Rindner said. When they make a supplement they don’t put a lot of an ingredient in it simply to have it in there, but instead they put in an amount that will have a therapeutic impact, he noted.

When the company was considering a focus on nutritional supplements and made the decision to go online, they considered a few key places to be—New York, California or the Washington, D.C. area, he said. Opening the business in the Dulles tech corridor helped provide the company with a great talent pool to get started, he said.

Another advantage of this area is the number of people who are health-conscious, Rindner said. They can connect with those who live a healthy lifestyle and take advantage of the area’s parks and trails, he said.

Herndon was a key location for the company as well, he said. Located on Herndon Parkway, Pure Matters is less than one mile from the W&OD Trail.

Employees are able to make use of the trail and many get involved in their communities too, such as with programs like Girls on the Run, he said. Pure Matters employees are also baseball players, marathon runners and other health enthusiasts who find they’re able to connect with their communities.

When it comes to their products, Rindner said Pure Matters works to include the appropriate therapeutic amount of ingredients in its supplements. He said those who use the supplements can know that they’re taking an amount that is appropriate for their needs.

Some of the company’s most popular products include a glucosamine chondroitin supplement called GlucoChon MSM for joint and tissue health, an alternative to prescription sleep aids called Rest Easy, and children’s gummy multi-vitamins.
