Gas prices in Virginia are near the lowest in the nation - but, in the Herndon area, they are slightly higher than the statewide average.

The average cost of regular unleaded gas in the Commonwealth is $3.262, according to GasBuddy.com.

South Carolina has the lowest average in the nation at $3.114.

The highest? Hawaii, at $4.401.

The cheapest gas in Herndon is at the Exxon gas station at the corner of Elden and Van Buren streets, at $3.42 as of late Friday afternoon - 16 cents per gallon above the statewide average.

At the start of September, when it seemed a U.S. attack on Syria was looming, industry experts warned a war would cause oil prices to spike, but at least for now, prices appear to be holding steady.
