Finnegan's Comes to Herndon

The new Irish-themed restaurant and bar features an array of Irish and American foods

Finnegan's, a new Irish-themed restaurant and bar, opened in Herndon earlier this month in the Woodland Crossing shopping center.

Bob Boojala, one of the restaurant's owners, said they were excited to come to the Herndon community. The first local Finnegan's location opened in Ashburn about a year and a half ago, he said. Plans for the Herndon location began in 2009.

Boojala said he and his partners chose the Herndon location because of its proximity to the airport, local businesses and residents, and because of the attractiveness of Woodland Crossing. "We like the area very much," he said.  He said he thinks the local community will add to the ambiance and character of Finnegan's.

When it comes to community involvement, Boojala said he would like to see Finnegan's get involved with local youth and team sports, such as softball. He said they would also like to get involved with local schools and charities.

The owners of Finnegan's hope to add entertainment such as karaoke, deejays and dancing, Boojala said. He said they will offer happy hour specials each week.

This week Finnegan's started the NFL season with raffles and door prizes during the games. Boojala said during NFL games the restaurant will have special sections for the fans of each team that is playing to gather and cheer on their team together.

Other features of the new business include a 3D television, which they will eventually have 3D glasses for, Boojala said. The booths in the restaurant feature televisions with DirectTV for people to watch what they want while dining.

Oscar Funes, the chef at Finnegan's, previously worked at the Hay Adams Hotel where he was an assistant chef. He also worked at the Occidental Grill. He said he has worked with many different types of cuisines and enjoys making Irish foods. Funes said when it comes to cooking at Finnegan's he most enjoys working with the diverse menu and array of drink options.

Boojala said since opening Sept. 1, Finnegan's has been hectic but good. He said they have had very steady business and have really appreciated the support of the community. "So far there's been a good response from everybody," he said.
