Pole dance, one thought to be just for strippers is changing as pole dancing as a fitness routine is becoming more mainstream, according to a DivaFit press release.

When the company opened its doors in Ashburn in 2006, it was the only pole studio in the area. Today DivaFit has three locations, and there are more than 10 different pole dance studios in Northern Virginia.

DivaFit owner Lisa Adams said she has seen a lot of changes in the pole industry in the last six years.

“People used to make joking comments when I told them I pole dance," Adams said. "Now most people say they have heard of it, take classes themselves, or have friends that do.”

There are regional, national and world pole dance competitions, at which both men and women compete, and there is a push to include pole dance int the Olympics.

DivaFit's instructors include those who are corporate executives at their day jobs, but teach pole dance for fun and fitness on the side. The studio's Kate Meier is a marketing executive who won the first Ms. Virginia Pole competition this year.

“At first I was afraid to tell people that I teach pole fitness, because of the negative stigma associated with pole dancing,” said Meier, who has taught at DivaFit for 2 years.

“I entered the DivaFit aerial showcase because I wanted to continue to demonstrate that pole fitness has many facets, and can be used as a beautiful and powerful artistic and creative medium," she said. "Pole fitness has made me stronger as a person inside and out.”

DivaFit released an app of pole dance tutorials this year, available for Apple products. The app has sold more than 500 copies, including to users as far away as Australia and Hong Kong. The studio has also sold more than 200 in-home poles to clients.
