8,400 New Jobs Committed to Fairfax County in 2012

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority said 186 companies committed business to Fairfax County last year; more than 700 of the jobs were pledged to Tysons.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority brought more than 8,400 jobs to the county in 2012, it announced this week — the majority of them in the professional services and information technology sectors and many in the Tysons area.

According to the FCEDA, Tysons will welcome almost 730 of the 8,400 jobs.

In Herndon, Micronic Technologies, Questa Source, LLC, TATA Communications Ltd., and URS Corporation all added jobs to the local economy.

IntelSat, leading provider in satellite services, was the year’s biggest announcement, moving almost 430 employees to its new headquarters in Tysons’ new Tysons Tower. The company is set to relocate in 2014.

The announcement about these 8,400 jobs came on the same day as County Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova's State of the County address. In her address, Bulova said development and revitalization in the Tysons area is driving a significant amount of economic growth in Fairfax County.

The FCEDA said 186 companies committed business to Fairfax County last year. Of the 186 companies, 138 were businesses based in the United States, including healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente and IT companies Carahsoft Technology and Fulcrum IT Services.

“For close to 200 companies to announce the addition of almost 8,500 jobs in 2012, while much of the rest of the Washington area continued to struggle economically, is a testament to the kind of economy that we have worked so hard to create in Fairfax County,” said Jerry Gordon, president and CEO of the FCEDA, in a statement.

More than 30 foreign companies also announced expansions to Fairfax County last year, including major automobile company Volkswagen, which moved more than 100 jobs to Herndon.
