5 Questions With the Owner of Herndon's Brand-New 'Hot Spot'

In our new feature, we get to know Herndon's local businesses and their owners.

Editor's Note: The holiday season is upon us! And Herndon Patch wants to shine a spotlight on great local businesses right here in Herndon through '5 Questions With...' the people behind them.

In our inaugural "5 Questions With..." we feature Calvert Thompson, the owner of one of Herndon's newest and most unique businesses, The Hot Spot! Hot Spot just opened in downtown Herndon in July.

PATCH: Tell us a little bit about you and your background.

Thompson:
I've been in the spa and wellness industry for almost 10 years. I am a certified massage therapist and master esthetician, owner of another Hendon business, Calvert Rejuvenations Spa, which I'm honored and proud to say has been voted 'best of' by Northern Virginia Magazine since 2006. I've been a wellness and health enthusiast, you might say, my whole life and so enjoy finding new ways and discovering simpler, "old world" remedies or tips and tricks to enhance everyday life.

PATCH: Tell us a little about your business and what you offer.

Thompson:
The Hot Spot is the region's first (and only) infrared sauna studio for wellness, weight loss and detoxing! Infrared Therapy utilizes invisible far-infrared light to raise your internal temperature and trigger sweating, your body’s most efficient mechanism for expelling accumulated toxins, chemicals, and energy (fat). Far infrared light doesn’t settle on the skin the way heat from traditional saunas does. The long wavelength penetrates beneath the skin into our subcutaneous fat, warming us from the inside out, raising our internal body temperature, and triggering a wonderfully productive detoxifying sweat.

And, because it’s your body being heated and not the air around you, a session in the Hot Spot is not only exponentially more pleasant than traditional saunas, but it produces a cardiovascular workout and corresponding caloric burn (up to 600 per session—yes, really!) you’d get from about an hour of vigorous exercise. Without the muscle fatigue, without the pain and misery associated with an intense workout, your body is shedding unwelcome toxins and burning away calories. It’s a restorative treatment that cleanses and rejuvenates your body from the inside out, reducing recovery time and soothing your nervous system.

The deep detoxification makes this therapy particularly important and amazingly therapeutic for Lyme sufferers and folks with fibromyalgia as well as arthritis (and so many more)!

PATCH: Where did the idea for your business come from?

Thompson:
My experience with infrared saunas began when I learned through blood tests that I had toxic levels of progesterone and stress hormones trapped in my body—not entirely uncommon, but can be quite troublesome to the fertility and “normal” function of women my age.  To detox my system from this overabundance of hormones and stress, infrared sauna sessions were prescribed by my doctor. I immediately recognized some amazing changes in my mood and my body, and totally fell in love with my sauna time.

In a 30- to 40-minute session I experience the same runner’s high—and enjoy the same, if not better calorie-burning benefits—I used to get when I’d run three miles! Due to an injury I’ve been unable to get back into running, so to find a way to tap into that ecstatic, cleaned-out, glorious feeling of a good, hard run…well, I was SOLD and I was desperate to share that feeling with people I cared about and who I knew would benefit from it so greatly!

Infrared sauna detoxification has changed my life. I feel an amazing sense of peace, and I feel lighter and cleaner and really wonderful after my sessions.

This is an experience, a life enhancement, that I strongly believe should be a regular part of everyone’s life.

PATCH: What do you love most about doing business in Herndon? What made you choose here for locating your business?

Thompson:
Herndon is a cute, appealing, friendly town in the midst of a buzzing metropolitan-light area.  There is such great energy and growth happening in Herndon! The sense of community and loving support from our neighbors and the officials in Herndon make it the ideal spot to introduce the Hot Spot and infrared sauna therapy to NoVA. This is a new concept and the interest and support from the Herndon community has been and will continue to be the best avenue to spread the word and educate the public at large about this simple, but amazingly enjoyable, therapeutic experience....It happened in Herndon first!

PATCH: The holiday season is upon us - what great services/products/specials should locals definitely come check out at your business this year?

Thompson:
The holidays are indeed upon us! I can't think of much else that would be better than the gift of a sauna membership for a loved one; 4-16 sauna sessions per month for a whole year will change the life of the recipient of this fabulous (and surprisingly affordable) gift! Gift certificates are available for purchase instantly online on our website, www.hotspotsauna.com, and may be purchased for any dollar amount, service or any of our packages, from a single session to a full year's membership.

VISIT Hot Spot of Herndon online at www.hotspotsauna.com or on Facebook. Hot Spot is located at 783 Station St. in downtown Herndon. Call 703-787-0060.
