5 Questions With...3 of Herndon's Most Stylish Business Owners

Have you met the three ladies behind this popular downtown business?

Editor's Note: The holiday season is upon us! And Herndon Patch wants to shine a spotlight on great local businesses right here in Herndon through '5 Questions With...' the people behind them.

In our latest edition, we feature the three women behind one of Herndon's most popular salons, Maude—Celeste, Tina and Vanessa.

PATCH: Tell us a little bit about you and your background.

CELESTE: I have an obsession of all things fashionable and it shows. I too, started out as a young fashionista and used fashion as a form of expression. I began my adventure in the fashion world as a receptionist in a salon and not long after that I decided to enroll in beauty school. I attended Graham Webb international as my formal education. Since then, I have continued honing my craft and pursued advanced education at Graham Webb, TiGi, Sebastian and Bumble & Bumble. My love of fashion did not stop there. I continued pursuing new fields in the industry and found myself doing editorial work, bridal shoots and event styling.

TINA: I started my journey in the beauty business as an assistant while I was still in high school, at South Lakes.  I graduated from the Graham Webb Academy of Hair Design at 18 years old and began my work behind the chair right away. The next eight years were spent perfecting my hairdressing skills and learning the structure of the beauty industry.

Maude was born out of a desire to create this unique environment, and I put my business ideas in motion.  With a no-nonsense focus on business, a love for connecting with people and the creative outlet of doing hair, I have the best of both worlds. I truly enjoys my role at Maude and am grateful to be able to love coming to work with such an energizing group of girls.

VANESSA: For most of my hairdressing career I have served as an educator. As a platform artist for Graham Webb and Color Educator for Framesi USA, I had the opportunity to hone my creative and technical skills and bring them back to my team. I was Director of Education for “Le Shoppe Salons” and “Christie Adam” before opening Maude Salon.

With a commitment to education I, along with my partners, have personally trained every member of the Maude Squad. I am on the Board of Directors for Paul Mitchell “The School,” and am a guest artist, regularly speaking to up-and-coming students in the industry. In 2011 I launched my own coaching program and the blog "Persephonee's Chair," which focuses on power principals for finding real joy behind your chair for industry professionals. I was also named “Northern Virginia’s Best Colorist" by Northern Virginia Magazine.

Maude is very excited to reside in Historic Herndon, and strives to give back to the community. In 2010, Maude was the recipient of the Reston Interfaith "Small Business of the Year" award for community service efforts giving back to the community. In 2012, Maude won Redken Salon of the Year.

At Maude, staff is trained from within to ensure they have the best hands-on experience to cultivate their learning. Maude also supports local artists and staff by offering unique handcrafted trinkets and jewelry for purchase in the Salon.

Maude offers all hair services as well as waxing and special occasion makeup.

PATCH: Where did the idea for your business come from?

MAUDE SQUAD: We designed Maude because we wanted to create the ultimate experience for the stylist as well as the guests. We knew we wanted to give back to our industry, and teaching young women the craft of hair seemed a great way to do that. It's much easier to be creative in an environment that we create, so that is what we strive to do—grow and empower growth in the young women that trust us to mentor their careers.

PATCH: What do you love most about doing business in Herndon? What made you choose here for locating your business?

MAUDE SQUAD: We love Herndon because its got a small-town feel, with a lot of character. We choose Herndon because we couldn't see ourselves in some basic strip mall. We were hoping that the community would support us and they have, and we do our best to give back to them where we can.

PATCH: The holiday season is upon us - what great services/products/specials should locals definitely come check out at your business this year?

MAUDE SQUAD: Locals should definitely come into Maude for a hair experience. We have a budget for everyone. Our Maude Squad are wonderful women who love and are passionate about hair, and most of all, building a relationship with their guests. We have amazing Redken and Purology Box sets and fantastic jewelry , candles and scarves.

The community can also support us in our annual No Mother Left Behind drive. We gift over 150 gift bags to moms in need in our community. See the flier for the drive, included in the photos section of this article.
