Thank you to the Herndon Patch for giving me the opportunity to write a blog.
My name is Bill Tirrell. My family has been in Herndon since 1978; my two children are Herndon HS grads. We’ve lived in two homes; one in the 1200 block of Summerfield Drive and the one in which we currently live. I’ve taken the time to become involved in a variety of local, state and national civic groups. A variety of awards have come my way for both the civic service – and for my prior service as an officer in the United States Navy. The list is on my website– www.billtirrellformayor.com. I bring many talents, chief among them are EXPERIENCE and LEADERSHIP.
My interest in town ‘governance’ started in 1985 when I was appointed to the Town’s Architecture Review Board. That was followed by appointment to the Board of Zoning Appeals and then to the Planning Commission circa 1988. During this period, I had no political aspirations – until 1990 when it was suggested to me that I run for Council. I did and I won a seat.

Since then I have been re-elected seven times. On two other occasions, I ran for mayor. I lost both times – once to a former mayor making his comeback and once to a council member backed by that mayor. Good learning experiences in running a non-partisan campaign against a well-organized group.
With Steve DeBenedittis’s decision to step down, I’m again putting myself before the voting public as a candidate for mayor. As in every other race I’ve been in, I have no political party supporting me and no ‘special interest groups’ backing me. I run as a non-partisan with only the good of the Town as my compass.

I look forward to serving the citizens for the next two years as our mayor in a Town government that is truly ‘Jeffersonian’ in its approach to governance. We meet as a council to take action on issues that come before us. Afterwards, we resume our full-time status as citizens of the Town.

I am asking for your votes to be our next mayor. The election is May 1; the polls are open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm and we all vote at the Community Center.
