First meaningful financial reports...

It’s almost time! Time for those first meaningful financial reports for those of us running for office in the May 1 election in Herndon.

The current council decided (in majority) to voluntarily enter into the Commonwealth’s political finance reporting. Only candidates in towns with populations over 25,000 have to do the reports. Herndon ‘volunteered’ to start reports early as our population is closer to 24,000.

I say decided ‘in majority’ since there were those members who preferred not to disclose where money came from and how it was spent. Yes, it's a bit of extra work, but as Herndon grows it becomes more important that our elections and the role of supporters be transparent.

I hasten to add that any of the PACs (Political Action Committees) and other groups that have donated to or spent money on behalf of candidates ALSO need to make their reports. A disturbing new factor in Herndon elections has been the infusion of money and paid workers by outside agenda-driven organizations with resources far greater than that of any candidate, and interests not in Herndon's behalf.

My treasurer and I have tried to make sure the report submitted for me will be letter perfect and disclose exactly what must be disclosed. I hope my opponents are doing likewise as are the several candidates for council seats.

I anticipate several folks looking at these reports from candidates and groups so as to be better informed.

Tracking the dollars makes sense after all—I guess.
