'Listen to Your Mother' Show Auditions Come to Herndon

The live-reading of essays on motherhood is looking for this year's stars.

Auditions for the “Listen to Your Mother” show, a live performance in which participants write and read aloud original essays on motherhood, are coming soon to Northern Virginia.

“The audience relates to the motherhood stories and hears perspectives they had never considered before,” said Kate Coveny Hood, producer for the DC region’s version of the show.

The live reading in celebration of Mother's Day will take place at Crystal City’s Synetic Theater in April. There are 23 versions of the show nationwide.

Hood, who lives in Reston, said she organized the regional "Listen to Your Mother" reading last year after being inspired by a Wisconsin blogger Ann Imig who founded the event.

"It wasn’t just putting on a show, it was a community experience,” Hood said.

Prospective readers can sign up for an audition appointments in Herndon and Gaithersburg, Md., starting this week. Show organizers will audition only 50 people, so spots fill up quickly, Hood said. Auditions are Feb. 9.

About 12 to 14 performers will read their essays during the show. Essays do not have to be memorized and is no specific agenda for the content, aside from the general guideline that the essay should pertain to motherhood. Men or women are welcome to participate.

Anyone is welcome,” Hood said. “It’s more about storytelling then writing or performing.”
