JamBrew Series to Bring Local Music to Herndon's Town Green

JamBrew will bring local music, local food and local brews to downtown Herndon on Sept. 2, 9 and 16

While summer is ending, there will still be a few nights of music on the town green thanks to the efforts of the Herndon Hospitality Association.

JamBrew (pronounced Jam-Ber-Roo) will feature local bands playing original music on the Herndon Municipal Center stage the first three Fridays in September.

Jay Hutchinson, one of the event’s organizers and board member of the HHA, said planning for the series began in January. He said last September they organized a September concert and decided to do something bigger this year.

All the bands playing as part of the series perform their own original music with the exception of the Kirk McKewen Band, which plays classic rock covers, Hutchinson said. He said many of the bands have a good local following.

Other featured bands in the series include Go, Byrn, Arteless and the Green Beets. Hutchinson said one of the goals of the JamBrew series was to bring a different style of music to a stage that is much different than the bands usually play on. He said many of the bands have a rock-jam style.

When Friday Night Live began Hutchinson said he remembers seeing a lot of original bands, and over time the series slowly made way for Top 40 cover bands. He said the style of bands FNL brings to Herndon provides for a great atmosphere in downtown Herndon on Friday’s in the summer.

He said the Herndon Hospitality Association was looking to add something a bit more “home grown” to the scene after the Friday Night Live series has ended. He hopes they can continue the event in future years.

General admission for JamBrew is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern will be on hand selling food and there will be eight different beers to try. Beer can be purchased by the sample or the glass.

On JamBrew’s Facebook event page more than 250 people have marked that they will attend with another 200 marked as possibly attending. Hutchinson said if the weather is nice and 500 people show up on Friday he will be pleased. “That would be good enough for me,” he said.

Hutchinson said so far people seem to be excited to have an outdoor concert event that will take them into the fall, while the weather is still nice. He said the bands are excited about the series and to play on the HMC stage. “There’s a lot of support for local music in Herndon,” he said.
