Friends of Runnymede Park Dedicating Native Plant Project Garden at ArtSpace

Native plants require less maintenance and work well together in landscaping

The Friends of Runnymede Park will dedicate a newly installed Native Plant Project garden at ArtSpace at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

The garden was created to highlight the value and beauty of using plants native to Virginia for landscaping. It was funded through a grant from the Nelson J. and Katherine Friant Post Foundation.

According to Friends of Runnymede Park native plants require less fertilizer and water, work well together and benefit the land, including birds, insects and wildlife.

“We feel that the Friends of Runnymede Park joining with the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts to showcase the botanical heritage of our town while displaying its native beauty is a perfect partnership,” said Friends of Runnymede Park President Dave Swan.

The Friends of Runnymede Park will be unveiling a brass plaque at the garden, which sits in front of the ArtSpace building. ArtSpace, located at 750 Center St., has been newly repainted.

“ArtSpace is dedicated to highlighting the beauty of the arts in Herndon, and the Native Plant Project was founded to highlight the beauty and viability of the native plants that are found in natural spaces such as Runnymede Park,” Swan said. “We are pleased to enhance the ArtSpace facility with these plants. It is our hope that residents will get ideas from this garden and find ways to use native plants in their own landscaping.”

After the dedication, ArtSpace will be holding the opening reception for its newest exhibit, which displays works by professors and graduates of the University of Notre Dame. Both events are free and open to the public.
