Call for Herndon-Inspired Photography

ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon are holding a contest seeking photography of Herndon for the "At Home in Herndon" town calendar

The first ever “At Home in Herndon” Town Calendar Photography Competition is officially underway.

ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon are seeking professional and amateur photographers age 16 and older to submit their entries in the competition. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2011.

Subjects for the entries must be located within the corporate limits of the Town of Herndon and photos depicting seasonal or community events will be given special consideration.

A panel of jurors will select the final evaluate the entries. Panelists include Jim Kirby, the “At Home in Herndon” calendar photographer for more than 20 years; Erik Patten, photography instructor at the Art Institute of Northern Virginia; and Scott Zetlan, a photographer who has judged the digital photography category for the Technology in the Arts Competition sponsored by the Council for the Arts.

Finalists will be invited to have their work displayed in the Post Gallery at ArtSpace Herndon from May 3-15. From the finalists, the Town of Herndon will choose the photographs to be published in the 2012 “At Home in Herndon” Town Calendar.

Every December the calendar goes out to more than 10,000 residents and businesses in the town. Photos chosen for the calendar will feature photographer’s names and web addresses.

Finalists in the program will also be eligible to recive the “At Home in Herndon People’s Choice Award” given to the photograph that best captures Herndon.

“Citizens and businesses look forward each year to the arrival of the ‘At Home in Herndon’ Town Calendar,” said Mayor Steve DeBenedittis, in a town press release.

“We are extremely grateful to Herndon’s arts organizations, ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon, for their initiative in developing this competition, and we are delighted to provide exposure for photographers who find artistic inspiration in our wonderful town.”

Grace Wolf, of the Council for the Arts of Herndon and Robin Carroll of ArtSpace Herndon said they are delighted to work together for the competition. They said it is a great opportunity to promote art as part of everyday life in the Town of Herndon.
