Winners, Photographs for Town Calendar Unveiled at Festive Reception

ArtSpace hosted a lively reception Saturday night, showing off the finalist photos and announcing the winners of the Town Calendar contest.

ArtSpace was full of life Saturday night for the reception honoring the finalists in the Town Calendar competition, and announcing the winning photographs that will appear in the finished product this year.

A buffet of appetizers and beverages was served, the room was festively lit, and roughly 100 people mingled and took in the full exhibit of 58 photographs from 30 artists, which were selected as finalists earlier this summer. Those in attendance included Mayor Lisa Merkel and several members of the Town Council, Virginia Delegate Tom Rust, County Supervisor John Foust, and many more.

All in all, this year's competition had 138 submissions, said president of the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts and the reception's emcee, Harlon Reece.

Town Mayor Lisa Merkel and Council for the Arts of Herndon representative Signe Freidrichs also addressed the crowd, welcoming everyone to the reception.

"I am so thrilled to see so many faces here this evening," said Merkel.

"We are so fortunate to have organizations of this caliber in our town, doing things like this in our town," she said of the Council for the Arts and the Foundation for the Cultural Arts.

This being its third year, the Town Calendar Competition and winners' reception were born out of need when the town's former professional photographer, who used to take the photos for the town calendar each year, retired. However, many say what has come out of that loss - the friendly, challenging competition and the festive reception held for the winners - is even better, for the sense of community and excitement and sense of ownership of the calendar they foster in the local residents and photographers.

"We really are a community of artists, and I'm excited to be a part of it," Merkel told the audience, just before announcing the 12 months of the forthcoming calendar and which photograph was chosen for each.

The winners are as follows:

JANUARY: "Snow Resting on Benches" by Keith Naquin
FEBRUARY: "Cardinal on Palmer" by Charles Walker
MARCH: "Mosby Raid" by Dave Kirby
APRIL: "Let's Go" by Chuck Mauro
MAY: "Salute" by Barbara Glakas
JUNE: "Friday Night Live Jam" by Ryan Dunn
JULY: "Red Tongues" by Ginger Kohles
AUGUST: "Paint the Sky" by Charles Walker
SEPTEMBER: "Huddle" by Cathy Powers
OCTOBER: "My Kiddos" by Becky Gardner
NOVEMBER: "Herndon in the Fog" by Andrew Rhodes
DECEMBER: "Snow Day on Elden Street" by Kathleen Betti

In addition, one more photo was selected for the calendar - the People's Choice winner. Members of the community are invited to stop by the exhibit at ArtSpace for weeks leading up to the reception and vote for their favorite out of all the photos, and that photo is selected for the flip-side of the cover of the calendar.

This year's People's Choice winning photograph was "Crooked Grind" by local teen Joshua Katz.

The judges for this year's competition were two local professional photographers, Lee Love and Carla Steckley.

The exhibit of all 58 finalist photos is up at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St., through Aug. 4. Photos by judges Love and Steckley are also on display.

The town calendars are distributed each year just before the holidays to all Town of Herndon residents and businesses.
