A group of students from Rachel Carson Middle participated in the 2011 Virginia Middle School Science Bowl

This week’s Whiz Kids are the students from Rachel Carson Middle School who participated in the 2011 Virginia Middle School Science Bowl in Newport News on March 5.

Though the Rachel Carson team didn’t advance to the playoffs, they were invited to participate in the Stay All Day Contest, taking part in two math, science and engineering challenges.

The team, coached by Frank Tarrant, won the Stay All Day Contest with the best combined results from the challenges. They won $300 for their school for taking the top spot.

Winning the entire event was Longfellow Middle School out of Falls Church. Their team wil travel to the Science Bowl nationals held in late April in Washington, D.C. The event took place at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Jefferson Lab in Newport News and included 18 teams from across the state.

The National Science Bowl tournament has been sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy since 1991 and is an annual academic competition. Teams face off against each other in an intense question-and-answer format. Contestants are quizzed on earth and space science, biology, chemistry, general science, math and physics. This year a category for energy has been added.
