An overview of this week's Herndon news

This month Fairfax County will be narrowing down a list of firms to start the process of rebuilding the fire station. The current 8,000-square-foot fire station would be demolished and a new 14,500-square-foot station built in its place. The project would take 30-36 months to complete.

Tuesday night the Town Council deferred the proposed 2011 legislative program until the Oct. 12 public hearing. The draft includes two parts, proposed and informal items. The proposed portion the undergrounding of utilities by contractors or a pro-rata share for utility undergrounding and legal advertising. The informal item takes a stance on the issue of human trafficking.

In Herndon High School sports, the field hockey team pulled off a win against TC Williams on Monday night, winning 2-0. Later in the week the golf team got rained out of day two of the Concord District championships. The Hornets football team made a valiant effort against Langley Friday night, losing at home 31-10.

ArtSpace Herndon opened its 2010 "Expressions" portrait exhibit Tuesday. The gallery first held the event last year, and the response was so large that it was made an annual occurrence. Of the 118 entries, 26 are on display in the exhibit.

Local tennis team, later this month. Read about the team, which includes Herndon resident and business owner Jackie Johnson of JJ Deli. In September the team became the Mid-Atlantic Champions.

Herndon resident Jeanette Townsend is training for the Marine Corps Marathon. Townsend wasn't an athlete or runner growing up, but took up the hobby in recent years. After her uncle died of leukemia she decided to do something in his memory and joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training.
