Unique Paid Internship Open to Herndon High Students

Applications will be available beginning next month.

Juniors at Herndon, Chantilly and Westfield high schools who are in good standing and have an interest in history are encouraged to apply for a unique new nine-month internship being offered in the county—and it's paid.

The Sully Historic Site announced this week the establishment of the new Margaret C. Peck Youth Internship program, sponsored by the Sully Foundation, Ltd.

The internship will run from April through December of 2014. Up to three interns will be hired.

Participants will gain experience in museum operations, public speaking, historic object collections, event programming and museum store and visitor center operations.

The internship is named in honor of former Sully Historic Site Administrator and Sully Foundation Member, Margaret C. Peck.  Peck is a longtime resident of the Herndon area, and a former educator with the Fairfax County Public School system.

"This internship honors her community service, dedication to educating young adults, and historic preservation efforts in the surrounding community," Fairfax County Parks representatives said this week.

Sully Historic Site, which is owned and operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority, will begin accepting applications for this internship program next month in December. Candidates will be asked to provide a completed application, written essay, and teacher recommendations by Jan. 31, 2014 for a panel to review.
