Photos: Council Celebrates 200th Birthday of Town's Namesake

Commander William Lewis Herndon would have been 200 on Tuesday.

Tuesday night the Town Council commemorated the 200th birthday of Commander William Lewis Herndon, whom the town was named for.

Cmdr. Herndon was "a Virginia native and brave Naval officer who went down with his ship in 1857," said members of the Herndon Historical Society.

Playing the role of Cmdr. Herndon was Gary Rinker from the Herndon Historical Society.
