Nearly 200 Turn Out for Memorial Day Observance in Herndon

Chestnut Grove Cemetery was filled with families, veterans, Boy and Girl Scouts and more for the American Legion's touching ceremony.

The mood was somber and reflectful as roughly 200 turned out to hear speeches and observe Memorial Day at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon on Monday.

Dr. Duane Young, MAJ, US Army (Ret.) gave a touching speech, recognizing fellow servicemen and talking about the importance of remembering and respecting those who have fought for our country's freedom. Young urged everyone to set aside thoughts of barbecues, parades and the "kickoff to summer" and instead reflect on the sacrifices of those who have served in the line of duty.

Many waved American flags in a show of patriotism and brought flowers to lay at the graves of servicemen.
