Herndon Honored for Commitment to Healthy Trees

The honor was given to the town for the 24th year in a row.

For the 24th year in a row, the Town of Herndon has been honored as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The honor is due to Herndon's "commitment to effective urban forest management."

To be considered for the award, Herndon met four requirements - having a tree board or department, having a tree-care ordinance, having an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and having an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

"Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Herndon make smart investments in the urban forests," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits."

Cleaner air, improved storm water managements, energy savings, and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits often enjoyed by Tree City USA communities, the Town of Herndon said.
