Herndon Democrats Take to the Polls

As of this morning, however, turnout was low.

Herndon residents trickled in one by one to the Herndon Community Center Tuesday morning to vote at their polling place for the Democratic Primary.

Cesar del Aguila, chairman of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee, was on hand to answer questions and assist voters. del Aguila said he voted early by absentee, but would be traveling throughout the county Tuesday checking to see if polling places needed help and assisting voters in any way he could "without persuading them one way or the other."

del Aguila said as of 10 a.m., only around 50 voters had come out to the Herndon Community Center to vote.

"But, in my experience, Democrats tend to vote later in the day, so I expect to see a big uptick after the 5 p.m. hour," he said.

Signe Freidrichs came out to cast her vote at the Community Center around 9:30 a.m. She said it was important to her to cast her vote in this election.

"I always feel, when I have the opportunity to vote, it's my duty to do so," she said.

Looking ahead to the November election, Freidrichs added, a few key issues are on her mind.

"This election to me, really, is all about economics, and women's rights. It's very important that these things get addressed by our legislators," she said.

"If we don't vote, we have no right to complain," she said.

A Herndon man who came out to vote said he was very interested in the candidates this time around.

"There are a lot of new candidates in this election, and for that reason, I think they have very unique differences," he said, explaining that was one reason he felt especially compelled to vote in Tuesday's primary.

Overall, he said, he has recently made a personal goal to pay more attention and do his part when it comes to the politics of the country.

"I feel like, our country has become a lot more politicized, recently, so for that reason I feel like it's becoming even more important to voice our opinions and vote," he said.
