Five Things to Know This Week

Herndon's Planning Commission will talk about Metro at its work session this week; West Springfield Dance Team will compete on America's Got Talent

Welcome to another installment of Five Things. The following is a few pieces of information that we hope will make your week a little easier or inform you.

1. The Town of Herndon’s Planning Commission will meet Monday night (Aug. 15) for a work session. During the work session they will discuss Herndon’s plans for Metro, including pedestrian and bicycle considerations, and goals, objectives and criteria for redevelopment. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Hoover Conference Room next to the Council Chambers at 765 Lynn St.

2. There will be no public computers available at any of Fairfax County’s libraries on Thursday and Friday (Aug. 18-19). Fairfax County is completing software upgrades, which will provide users with increased session times, more Internet stations and access to Microsoft Office 2010. WiFi access will still be available at libraries.

3. Fairfax County Operation WOW (Wellness Opportunities for Warriors) is looking for veterans who are interested in volunteering as mentors to injured military service members who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Those volunteering with the program meet with service men and women once a week on Fridays in various locations. For more information call Paul Woods at 703-324-5347.

4. The Town of Herndon’s Employee Advisory Committee is hosting a Community Yard Sale on the Town Green on Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is still space available to those who want to sell items at the yard sale. Space rental is $10 and space rental with a table is $15. For more information, call 703-435-6800, extension 2035.

5. If you watched America’s Got Talent last week you likely saw the performance by West Springfield Dance Team, of Springfield, VA. The group performed a precise, and slightly creepy, dance that left judge Sharon Osbourne very impressed. She chose them as her “wild card” act to bring back this week when the show airs at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16. , or watch clips of their America’s Got Talent performance on YouTube.
