Five Things to Know This Week

The Town of Herndon's next Metro meeting is tonight at 7 p.m.

at a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Mary Ingram Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St.

The town is working to prepare for the coming metro, which will be located in the median of the Dulles Toll Road. The station will connect to the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride garage on the south side, and the sidewalk at 575 Herndon Parkway on the north side, in the Town of Herndon.

at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St. The exhibit, “Mind, Heart, Vision,” is a juried show featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, computer graphics and animation artwork by HHS seniors.

This is the first time HHS has held a juried art exhibit at a gallery for its seniors. Jurors included two professional artists, former HHS art teacher Eileen Murphy and professional painter Jeanette Galie Burkle. The show will be open through May 31.

ArtSpace is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

will be from May 25-31 this year. During that time, residents who purchase items designated by the Virginia Department of Taxation as hurricane and emergency preparedness equipment will be exempt from Virginia sales tax.

Items less than $60 are eligible for the sales tax holiday, which includes batteries, flashlights, tarps, rope, duct tape, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, bottled water, first aid kits, and many other items. Also included are portable generators costing $1,000 or less.

4. Help Relay for Life – Herndon raise funds to fight cancer by going to Chick-fil-A at Sugarland Road off of Route 7 on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of purchases to Herndon Relay if customers mention they are with Relay for Life.

Herndon Relay for Life will take place on Saturday, June 11, with registration starting at 11 a.m. and the event starting at 1 p.m.

Dave Matthews tribute band Crowded Streets and Six to Midnight.

Crowded Streets is a band from Virgnia who works to reproduce the experience of a live Dave Matthews Band performance. Six to Midnight is a class/party/modern rock band playing everything from the classic sounds of the Stones and Zeppelin to Sublime and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The weekly concert takes place on the Town Green behind the Herndon Municipal Center on Friday from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Just remember to leave the pets at home and outside alcohol is not allowed. Food, beer and plenty of beverages can be purchased on site.
