Delegate Rust to Speak Out on Financial Exploitation of Seniors

Himself a prior victim of identity theft, Rust will host a forum on the issue in Herndon on Wednesday.

We've all heard stories of vulnerable senior citizens or the elderly being taken advantage of with fraud schemes, identity theft and other scams that can be hard to recover from.

That's why Virginia Delegate Tom Rust, who represents Herndon, will hold an informative talk on the matter this coming Wednesday, July 17, at the Herndon Senior Center.

The talk, entitled "The Financial Exploitation of Seniors," will feature a "comprehensive summary discussion" of the growth of fraud on seniors, the most common types of fraud on seniors, how to spot a fraudster, steps to take to prevent becoming a fraud victim, and what to do if one thinks he or she has been the victim of fraud.

Though the forum is hosted by Rust, the talk will largely be conducted by a member from the Virginia Attorney General's office.

In a news release, Rust stated he was inspired to host the forum based on his own experience as a prior victim of identity theft.

The event will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Herndon Senior Center, 873 Grace Street in Herndon.

The event is free, but Rust's office recommends those wishing to attend reserve a spot in advance by calling his office at 703-437-9400 or e-mailing his legislative aide, Carol Sinclair, at csinclair@tomrust.org.
