Calling All Photographers - Help Fill the Town Calendar!

For the third year, the Town is holding a contest for all professional and budding photographers to submit images for the 2014 town calendar.

Perhaps you're a professional photographer who'd love to call attention to your business.

Or, maybe photography's just your hobby, but you're really proud of a photographe or two you've taken around Herndon.

Either way, or anything in between, the Town wants to see your work.

For the third year in a row, the Town of Herndon, in partnership with ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon (CAH), is holding its Town Calendar photography competition.

Each year, the Town's public information office publishes the calendar and sends it out in December as a gift to all residents and owners of town businesses.

Town spokesperson Anne Curtis said, previously, for roughly 20 years, the town calendar was filled with images by former local photographer Jim Kirby.

"We'd always have these wonderful images from him he'd bring in for the calendar," she said. "Then, a few years ago, he retired and moved on."

Since then, the Town got together with members from ArtSpace Herndon and the CAH to brainstorm a "call for art" from locals.

"We wanted to bring in both professional and amateur photographers who had great photos from around town," Curtis explained.

To submit photos, she added, the photographers don't need to live in Herndon, as long as the images were taken in Herndon, either of local sights or at local events within the Herndon corporate limits.

Now, the contest is in its third year, and Curtis said, the Town can't wait to see what images are going to come in for the 2014 calendar.

The deadline to enter is coming up on June 17 at 5 p.m. for online or mail submissions, or June 18 at 5 p.m. for submissions that are walked in to the ArtSpace Herndon center.

Who can enter? What to enter? How to enter?

The contest is open to anyone 16 years or older. An entrant does not need to live in Herndon, as long as the photo they wish to enter was taken in Herndon or at a Herndon event.

What types of photos are the selection panel looking for? Curtis said, "a mix of people, places and events," spanning all seasons and events throughout the year in Herndon.

"We really like photos of people, celebrating and enjoying Herndon," she said. "We look forward to having a whole new, fresh perspective, from a lot of different photographers."

There is no cost to enter. If photos have an identifiable person in them, the entrant must have a signed release by the subject, which can be found on the entry page on ArtSpace Herndon's website.

Photos must be a minimum of 1MB in file size, and a maximum of 5MB, and be in "jpeg" format. Photos must be horizontal. All photos must be in full color.

Images can be submitted electronically by e-mail, or by mail or in person digitally on a CD or as prints. Prints must be at least 8.75” x 11.25” in size.

Winners of the contest

On July 27, a Town Calendar reception will be held at ArtSpace Herndon. There, all winning photographs will be on display, and will remain up for a special two-week exhibit.

During the reception, Mayor Lisa Merkel will announce the 12 months of the calendar, as well as the winner of the special "People's Choice" award, for which all reception attendees will vote, earlier in the night.

"It's becoming a real fun, community event," Curtis said, of the competition and the reception.

Curtis said, already, the town has received several entries, but they'd really love more, so that the judges - two professional local photographers - will have a good group to choose from.

"We can't wait to see what photos come in this year," Curtis added.
