Assistance League of Northern Virginia, Dominion Pack Weekend Food For Kids

Nearly 50 volunteers help pack food for area children in need.

Volunteers from Dominion Virginia Power joined the Assistance League of Northern Virginia to help pack food for children in need on Thursday.

Schools that receive food through the program include Cora Kelly Elementary School in Alexandria, Lynbrook Elementary and Garfield Elementary schools in Springfield, and Yorkshire Elementary School in Manassas.

About 80 percent of the children who receive free or reduced priced meals at the four schools receive weekend food packages. The children who receive the packages may otherwise go hungry on weekends.

Each month, volunteers from Dominion and the Assistance League, along with community volunteers, gather at Dominion's offices in Herndon to pack food. Volunteers in Dominion trucks deliver the food to the schools.

Dominion spokesperson Le-Ha Anderson said they invite other area businesses and organizations to join them during the Weekend Food for Kids Program to see they can volunteer with the Assistance League to help expand it to other schools. She said if they can expose others to the program and help it grow, they see it as a success.

On Thursday representatives from Cox and Loudoun County Public Schools came to check out the program. The Assistance League hopes to expand the program to a Loudoun County school next.

Anderson said companies can join in to help collect and pack food, as well as adopt a school and provide funding for that school's Weekend Food for Kids program.
