On May 28, 2014, six students from Hutchison Elementary received special recognition from Mayor Lisa Merkel when she stopped by to present them with certificates for their participation in a year-long project to increase participation in school and community events. The project was organized by Rochelle Proctor, Assistant Principal; Melinda Markfelder, STEM teacher; and Zeina Hamad, Advanced Academics teacher and provided the students with the opportunity to either help with or attend various school and community events that demonstrated pride in the community and an interest in making Herndon a better place to live. To receive the certificates, the students needed to participate in at least six events throughout the year. Sixteen other students received honorable mention for attending three events.
With all the obligations that families face in today’s society, as Mayor Merkel pointed out during her presentation, it is difficult to attend even three extra‑curricular events. Being able to attend six events is indeed something to be proud of and something to be recognized. In addition to receiving their certificates, the six students received tickets for five free rides at the Herndon Festival.
