“Girls are underrepresented in STEM careers and particularly in computer science, girls who pick STEM careers do so because they want to make a difference in the world around them,” said Elizabeth Gibson, Herndon Elementary School GEMS Coordinator. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.) The Hour of Code helped the Herndon GEMS Club share their own enthusiasm for coding while teaching other students the basics.

The GEMS Club, founded in 1994 spurred by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Reston-Herndon Branch, has served 5,000 girls to promote studying and pursuing STEM education and careers.  For more information, please visit www.gemsclub.org.
