Electronics Recycling Event in Herndon on January 11

Four Seasons Recreation Association and the Herndon Environmental Network are pleased to announce a free Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, January 11. Everyone is encouraged to bring their old electronic items - such as TVs, telephones, computers, printers, ink cartridges, scanners, and DVDs – so they can be disposed of sustainably. Virtually all items will be accepted (see list below). Collection will take place at the Four Seasons Clubhouse, 1201 Herndon Parkway, on Saturday, January 11 from 10:00am-3:00pm.

All items will first be inspected to see if they may be sold and reused “as is.” If not, they will be safely disassembled so the component materials may be recycled and reused. Recycling will be provided by Forever Green Recycle in Chantilly, VA, a full service recycler with a strict “no landfill” policy. Materials are disassembled here in Virginia, not shipped overseas.

Four Seasons Recreation Association, a local HOA representing 683 homes, decided to organize this event after participating in this summer’s “Battle of the Bottles” recycling competition, run by the Herndon Environmental Network (HEN) and the Town of Herndon. The friendly competition pitted two Herndon neighborhoods against each other to see whose residents could increase the amount of material they were recycling by the greatest percentage. Hunters Creek just edged out Four Seasons to win the competition, but according to Steve Marting, the Four Seasons secretary, “We began to think about how our neighborhood could become more involved in environmental issues and we decided to reach out to HEN to see if they would like to partner with us on a special recycling event.”

This Electronics Recycling Event is the first collaborative event between the Herndon Environmental Network and Four Seasons. According to David Shupp, HEN board member, “We’re excited to be working with Four Seasons and providing a way for local residents to dispose of their old electronics safely and with a much lower environmental impact than if the materials were taken to a landfill.”

The event will take place on Saturday, January 11 from 10:00am-3:00pm at the Four Seasons Clubhouse, 1201 Herndon Parkway. Volunteers and Forever Green staff will unload items directly from cars. Everyone is welcome to drop off old electronic items. Clean out your clutter and help the environment!
