Welcome to "Today in Herndon," Patch's new daily news briefs that bring you a quick glance at the day's news and events.

1. There is still a lot of summer left. Want to head to the pool? Reston Association has slashed its prices for non-resident and corporate pool and tennis passes. Prices are now 50 percent off through the end of the summer. For more details, visit our sister site, Reston Patch.

3. Important note: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter has temporarily stopped taking in animals after approximately 12 dogs came down with an unknown respiratory illness. One of the dogs has died, and staff worry that it could be canine influenza, and are awaiting test results which could be available Tuesday or Wednesday. Those who are interested in adopting or temporarily sheltering a health or recovering animal until the sicknesses at the shelter have passed should contact the shelter at 703-324-0208 or Kristen.auerbach@fairfaxcounty.gov.

4. The Town of Herndon Police Department will be undergoing reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), “as part of its commitment to meeting professional law enforcement standards,” the department said in a news release this week. Agencies must re-qualify for the accreditation every three years. To re-qualify, the department must re-demonstrate compliance with CALEA’s standards. As part of its compliance assessment, agency employees and members of the public are invited to call or write in with questions or comments on the Police Department. Telephone comments will be accepted on Aug. 5 from 3-5 p.m. by calling 703-435-6881 ext. 2356. In-person comments at the station, 397 Herndon Parkway, will be accepted during a public information session on Aug. 5 at 5:30 p.m. Comments can also be written and mailed to CALEA, 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.
