Huge Community Yard Sale Saturday, Learn the Art of Home Food Preservation, and More

Looking for a way to give back? Fairfax County very much needs respite care volunteers. These volunteers would help care for disabled or home-bound residents, to help give a break to their family members or full-time caregivers. Tonight at 7 p.m. the Walker Nature Center, 11450 Glade Dr. in Reston, will hold a Home Food Preservation class. This introductory class to home food preservation covers canning, fermentation, drying/dehydration, and freezing. Participants will learn about the science behind food preservation and different canning methods. Other topics will include safety precautions, preservation methods (fermentation, drying, freezing), food and recipe selection, kitchen set-up, jar and equipment preparation (sterilization of jars, lid prep, “assembly line” set-up) and much more. Attendance is $5-8 per person. Want to do some shopping this weekend, without breaking the bank? The Rock Hill neighborhood is having a giant Community Garage Sale this Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. – more than a dozen families are participating! Browse baby items, furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, appliances and much more. Rock Hill is located near Rock Hill Road and Turquoise Lane.

Looking for a fun way to get active? The Herndon Senior Center, 873 Grace St., will host a free introductory, open-house session of Modern Western Square Dancing tonight, Thursday the 12th, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. All ages 9 and older are welcome, as well as couples. Following the open house, the fall session of regular classes will begin and runs from Sept. 19 to Dec. 19. For more information, click here to view the event listing on Patch.
