Dulles Day Plane Pull & Family Festival This Weekend, Herndon High's Naval Jr. ROTC Expands Program to More Students, and More

Our daily briefs, bringing you local Herndon news and events at a glance.

Mark your calendars for a fun day at Dulles airport this Saturday. Yes, you read that right – a fun day at the airport! This Saturday, Sept. 14 is the 21st annual Dulles Day Plane Pull and Family Festival, on site at the airport. The event benefits Special Olympics Northern Virginia. This year, four groups based out of Herndon, out of 70 competing in all, will be competing in the event’s premiere challenge – to see who can pull an 82-ton FedEx cargo jet 12 feet in the shortest period of time! The groups include employees from Cisco, from the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, from the Westin Washington-Dulles hotel, and from “ikPunjabi,” a locally-based global, nonpolitical, nonreligious, nonprofit organization that celebrates Punjabi culture and fosters communities among the local Punjabi communities. In addition to the Plane Pull, other features of the event include live music, a pizza-eating contest, airplane displays, tours of the active runways, kids’ play areas with bounce-houses and a dunk tank, a classic car show, food and refreshments, and much more. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, including a site map, visit http://www.planepull.com.

Is your Herndon High student looking for a challenging extra-curricular activity? Herndon High’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) recently announced a new Auxiliary Cadet Program, which allows students to participate in all Corps activities – such as athletics, rifle marksmanship, orienteering, color guard, drill competitions, community service, the Military Ball, and travel – as an extra-curricular program. Auxiliary Cadets choose the activities they’re interested in, that fit into their schedules. Participation helps students develop self-confidence, strong leadership skills and discipline, as well as an appreciation for the talents of all team members, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. To learn more about the program and about Herndon’s NJROTC, click here to read their announcement on Patch.

It all takes place next Saturday from 12-6 p.m. How much does it cost? There are a variety of ticket options depending on how “VIP” you want to get.
