Three Horses Slashed near Frying Pan Park; Police Search for Suspect

Three horses near Frying Pan Farm Park were injured between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Three horses were wounded near Frying Pan Farm Park in the 2600 block of Centreville Road, and the Fairfax County Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding out who harmed the horses.

The horses belong to the Spirit Open Equestrian Program, which teaches people with disabilities how to ride horses. The horses reside on a paddock adjacent to Frying Pan Farm Park and the program uses FPFP facilities. The horses were cut by a sharp object on their hind quarters, leaving about eight-inch gashes. Police say the horses were hurt between 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 and 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 26.

All three horses that were cut needed immediate medical attention, though the wounds do not appear to be life threatening, according to a Fairfax County police press release. The program's Executive Director, Dada Suvak, said, "They will be fine after some therapy and rest, but it left us feeling hurt, angry and very vulnerable."

Police say employees of Frying Pan Farm Park saw a man stumbling around the park around 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 26. He is described as white, about 5-feet 8-inches tall, and about 160 pounds. It is not known if he was involved in the incident.

Anyone who may have been in or near the park during the time frame of the incident and recalls seeing anything suspicious is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-8477, send an email from www.FairfaxCrimeSolvers.org, or call the Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

The Spirit Open Equestrian Program has six horses and operates on a small budget using many community volunteers. To learn more about how to volunteer with or assist the program, visit Spirit Open Equestrian's blog here.

Patch will have more on this story later Friday.

Correction: The incident did not happen on Frying Pan Farm Park property but on a paddock adjacent to the property.

I cannot begin to comprehend what would ever motivate someone to do such a heartless, cruel thing. But I do know what motivates me to want to slash the hindquarters of the jackass who did this to those horses, and by extension, to the fine folks who provide a wonderful service. Sorry...can't help it. I feel that people should get as good as they give.

Thank you so much for your comment, Willa, but I would kindly ask that you refrain from swearing on Patch. (I understand your frustration though—I rode horses growing up and can't imagine the anger I'd feel if someone harmed my dog.)

Leslie, are you referring to Willa using the word 'jackass'?? If so, it's not a "swear word"!

Don, now you've got me doing a little research and I see it's not unusual to see it in news stories and articles. Thank you, and my apologies to Willa. I grew up in a fairly conservative area of the Midwest where even the mildest words were usually considered offensive.

I worked on the farm when I was a teenager. This news is so upsetting! I hope the police catch the person who did this. More so, I hope the person is prosecutted to the fullest extent of the law! There probably needs to be some changes to the security policies at the farm. We need to keep the animals safe from people like this.

The way our society is just about anything can be condoned. Perhaps the felon(s) fell off a pony when they were younger...
I sincerely hope that whomever was culpable is caught, and ordered to muck stalls for 500 hours.
This article makes me dad, so very sad.

I agree with all of the above comments. Did they have any surveilance cameras around the park/barn?

I take my dog to Frying Pan Park 2-3 times a week and have seen the handicapped kids on the horses. It is truly a beautiful sight. I am saddened that some idiot would hurt these gentle animals.

When it comes to animals and being harmed at the hands of a human makes me ill. Kathy thanks for posting the link. I shall make a donation this moment as I am sure the vet bills will be rolling in soon.

Also - Willa, you took the words right out of my mouth!

I've also already made a significant donation. The depravity of the cruelty to animals at the center of the story is exceeded only by the meanness of its effect on the disabled kids who get so much joy from riding these horses.

I am so sorry to hear this horrible news... It left me in tears as I love my horse and it is beyond comprehension that someone could carry out such an act of demonic expression.
I pray this or these people are revealed and justice is served. I also am believing for camera's and help/via angels around to help alert or avert such horrific acts in the future, toward all of our horses...love and healing to you at Frying Pan ...

So wrong on so many levels...I hope whoever did this is caught. The rest of us decent human beings don't need sick people like this in the neighborhood.

Very sad that people are so cruel and insensitive. I fear that our society is somehow fostering such outbursts.
