Organizers Get Ready for Herndon Relay for Life
This year's Herndon Relay will be held June 8. The theme is decades.
Herndon Relay for Life has kicked off its 2013 season and preparations are underway for the annual June 8 relay event.
Kickoff for Herndon Relay was held earlier this month at the Herndon Police Station. This year's Herndon Relay for Life will start at 1 p.m. on June 8 at Herndon Middle School and end at about 6 a.m.
There are currently 16 teams registered, including 95 participants. This year marks the 10th year of Relay in Herndon, and this year's theme is decades. Teams are encouraged to pick a theme of any decade from the 1910s to the present.
Three team meetings will be held over the next few months leading up to the big Relay event. All three meetings will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place in the Herndon Middle School cafeteria. Meetings will take place on March 19, April 24 and May 23.
At team meetings Relay organizers will collect canned goods brought in to be used to weigh down Luminaria bags. After Relay is over the canned goods will be donated to a local food bank.
During the Luminaria ceremony there will be a Cancer Has a Face slideshow. Herndon Relay organizers invite participants and community members to share their pictures of of those battling and those lost to cancer. Photos can be sent to HerndonFaces@gmail.com.
Those looking to sign up as a team or individuals for Herndon Relay for Life can do so at www.HerndonRelay.org. More information can be found on Herndon Relay's Facebook and Twitter pages as well.

Is this a Pro-Life event? Sounds like fun, its just not clear from the article what group/charity this supports.

Hi Sean! Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's biggest fundraiser. Many communities all over the country participate and hold their own Relay event, including Herndon, Reston and many other local communities. AOL's Dulles headquarters actually holds its own Relay event as well.
