NOVA Roller Derby Season Opener Saturday
The NOVA Roller Derby season opens when the Backwoods Rollers take on the Beltway Betties.
The Backwoods Rollers and the Beltway Betties will take to the flat track to open the NOVA Roller Derby season at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Michael and Son Sportsplex at Dulles.
This is the first bout of the league's second season. Teams drafted players in December and have been rigorously preping for the season since with practices full of skills, drills, scrimmages and cross training.
Saturday will mark the third time the two teams have met, and each has taken away a win previously.
The bout will follow the offical rule set of Modern Athletic Derby Endeavor, a national affiliation of leagues that promotes fair and skilled competition.
Tickets can be purchased in advance of the bout for $10 at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $12, and children 6 years old and under are free.
The Sportsplex is located at 21610 Atlantic Blvd., in Sterling. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and fans can get their choice of seats. Snacks will be available for purchase.
For the month of March, NOVA Roller Derby is partnering with Aurora School, which provides a progressive learning environment serving students age 5-22 with intellectual abilities. The league is asking attendees of the bout who wish to help support Aurora School to bring puzzles of any size or difficulty to donate to the school.
After the bout, skaters will be at O'Faolain's Irish Pub, located at 20921 Davenport Dr., in Sterling, where fans can join them and learn more about the sport.
