Local Girl Scouts Collecting Blankets for Reston Interfaith

Local Girl Scouts are collecting blankets for Reston Interfaith in honor of the Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary

Girl Scout troops from Service Unit 51-7 have launched the Spread the Warmth: Girl Scout 100 Blanket Drive to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts in 2012. 

The blanket drive supports Reston Interfaith's

"Community service has been a core value of Girl Scouts since founder Juliette Gordon Low created the first troop in 1912, and through our annual winter service project, we're able to leverage the power and efforts of the almost 400 Girl Scouts in our service unit,” said Anne Parrish, a service unit manager.

The girls in Reston, Herndon and the Oak Hill area have already begun to collect blankets and linens from family and friends and will bring donations to an event on Dec. 12, where they'll hear from a representative from Reston Interfaith on how they can continue volunteering for the betterment of the community throughout the holidays and well into the new year. 

Additionally, during their event the girls will create collection bags donated by in Reston that will be used for neighborhood door-to-door collections for more donations. Area residents who would like to donate blankets and linens can donate by emailing GSCNCSU517@yahoo.com.

The Girl Scouts in Service Unit #7 of Association #51 Ashgrove West are part of the Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capital out of Washington, D.C. Troops include girls from elementary through high school age in Herndon, Reston and Oak Hill.
