Clearview Girls Bake to Give Back

A group of sixth grade girls from formed The Baking Squad in December to try to give back in the local community.

Sixth grade students in Fairfax County are tasked with earning six hours of community service, and The Baking Squad has earned much more than that through their program. They found something they love to do and turned it into a plan to help others.

The girls began getting together once a month to bake dozens of cookies for local homeless shelters throughout the area. The Baking Squad includes Marissa Brizzolara-Smith, Emily Postlethwait, Emma Rood, Jessica Becks and Juliana Yerovi.

The Baking Squad alternates which shelter they donate to each month, and has provided donations of baked goods to the in Reston and the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax. They’ve baked 53-dozen cookies for the Embry Rucker Shelter and 58-dozen cookies for the Katherine Hanley Shelter.

The girls gather after school one day to plan what they’ll bake, then the following weekend they take stock of their supplies, spend the day baking and label the cookies for delivery. They make the decisions on what to make and how much and on baking day they make between 20-25 dozen cookies.

Marcy Brizzolara, a Baking Squad mom, said the homeless shelters the girls are working with have been very appreciative and all the parents are proud of the girls’ dedication.
